It’s described as ‘dark, smoky and unexpected’. Even ‘out of character’.
This is The Macallan single malt whisky as you’ve never seen or tasted it before, drawn from a production base of less than 100 casks and limited to its initial production run, making it a genuine collector’s item for whisky connoisseurs and collectors – and it’s only available in travel retail.
It’s called Rare Cask Black, part of The Macallan 1824 Masters Series. Bottled at 48% ABV and non-chill filtered, the range extension carries a RRP of US$450 and will be available in selected airports around the world.
In its departure from The Macallan’s signature sherry-touched flavours, Rare Cask Black underlines Macallan’s commitment to creativity, innovation and experimentation, claimed parent company Edrington.
Rare Cask Black also signals a radical departure from The Macallan’s traditional look. A unique, travel retail exclusive, premium all-black presentation [Note: In support of the brand’s commitment to the channel, and The Moodie Report Publisher’s allegiance to a certain team currently playing in the Rugby World Cup, we’ve just turned our website ‘all black’ for the next few days] bestows Rare Cask Black with a visual identity that sets it apart in the channel and mirrors the spirit’s unexpected flavour profile, the company noted.
“The launch of Rare Cask Black marks an important and exciting step for The Macallan’s journey in travel retail, retaining the core Macallan DNA while offering something new and thrilling for consumers,” commented Edrington Global Travel Retail Managing Director Tellis Baroutsis.
“We’re confident that the story behind its creation, its genuine scarcity and its bold visual identity – along with its unfamiliar flavour profile – will appeal to global travellers who look to the travel retail channel to offer something unexpected and differentiated from domestic offers.”
Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno, the architect of the new addition, said: “Rare Cask Black tells a different story about our spirit and casks, but more than that it tells a story of rarity. Smoky Macallan is rare; there is very little in existence and once used these casks will be no more.
“This is a whisky which is out of character for The Macallan due to the subtle seam of smoke on the palate, but it still bears the essential Macallan DNA.”
Tasting notes: From 100% sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks (most of which are first fill) the malt shows an intensity of flavour from a thread of peat smoke, Rare Cask Black combines dried fruits, nutmeg, ginger and polished oak plus dates, figs and raisins, heavy but sweet. A dry smokiness reveals itself yielding to softer oak tones. The finish is long, fruity with an elegant wood smoke.
