Oslo Airport awards contracts to SSP and Autogrill’s HMSHost International

SSP will open two concepts from UK chef Jamie Oliver – a bakery called Deli & Bakery by Jamie Oliver and Jamie’s Italian

NORWAY. Oslo Airport has awarded contracts to SSP to operate 29 retail and food & drinks outlets, and HMSHost International to open 10 points of sale.

The agreement with SSP is valued at approximately £500 million (€708 million) and runs for five years for the retail outlets and seven years for the food and beverage units.

Following its contract win, HMSHost International will now set up a new joint venture company with Umoe Restaurants in Norway, to be called HMSHost Umoe F&B Company.

HMSHost’s parent company Autogrill said it expected to generate overall revenues in excess of €270 million over the course of the seven-year concession.

It represents HMSHost’s first operation in Norway, but the company currently operates 39 stores at the Scandinavian airports of Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm-Skavsta and Stockholm-Arlanda.

SSP to offer firsts for Norway

SSP’s outlets will open between 2016 and 2018, and will feature international brands such as Starbucks and “˜firsts’ for Norway including two concepts from UK chef Jamie Oliver – a bakery called Deli & Bakery by Jamie Oliver and Jamie’s Italian.

Locally renowned names such as Oslo’s oldest bakery WB Samson will also feature, along with a number of bespoke concepts showcasing the Scandinavian region. Among these is Hunter Bar, which “has been designed to encapsulate the masculinity as well as the softer virtues of the modern Norwegian man”, according to SSP, and serves “hearty” dishes including venison.

Norgesglasset is named after a type of glass that was produced in Norway from the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1970s, and celebrates the best of Norwegian design. At Aquavit Bar, passengers can experience the famous Scandinavian potato-based liquor, as well as beers.

SSP Norway and Denmark Managing Director Morten Solberg Nilsen said; “SSP has been operating at Oslo Gardermoen since 1998, and we are delighted to be building on our relationship with the team here as the airport moves into a new era. Our offer has been designed to help the airport achieve its ambitions to create a “˜Gateway to Scandinavia’, and we are certain that this outstanding brand line-up will do much to further enhance the customer experience at Oslo Airport.”

HMSHost blends international names and local specialities

The first of HMSHosts’ 10 points of sale are expected to open in November 2016, with the remainder in the first quarter of 2017, and will consist of a mix of international and local concepts.

Wagamama (the first in Norway), Two Tigers and Burger King are among the international brands to feature, while several “˜made in Norway’ concepts will also open. These include: Bølgen & Moi Food Garage, created by Norwegian chef Trond Moi; Fiskeriet, a label known for its quality fish and original preparation techniques and service; and Oslo Sausage Co, which specialises in the culinary tradition and culture of the Norwegian sausage.

Peppes Pizza has renewed its contract in the arrivals area and will become part of the joint venture in the future.

The outlets will be located across the food court in the pre security arrivals area and in the domestic departure area.

HMSHost International CEO Walter Seib said: “After our success in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, we’re thrilled to be able to start up at Oslo Airport in Norway, the only Scandinavian market where we had no operations so far.

“Together with Umoe we developed 10 high-profile concepts that will help make Oslo an exclusive hub also in terms of its food & beverage offering”.

Ronny Gjøse, Managing Director at Umoe Restaurants subsidiary Blender – and future Managing Director of the new joint venture company – said: “We have waited a long time for the opportunity to offer high quality F&B concepts to travellers at Oslo airport. We have prepared thoroughly and developed a strategy consisting of concepts all suited for travellers.”
