CHINA. Our regular column presents a snapshot of retailer promotional activities. This week we focus on the run-up to the critical Chinese New Year period, featuring a wide array of celebratory gifting ideas and exclusive offers.

China Duty Free Group

CDFG has been hosting a ‘Love Luxury, Love Yourself’ promotion on a wide selection of brands including Balmain, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Stuart Weitzman and Burberry.

Customers with eligible spend can enter lucky draws for silk sleep masks from The Beast, leathergoods and preserved flowers, and receive customised red packet covers when they shop for select brands.

As the Year of the Tiger nears, CDFG is also promoting handbags, clothing, and accessories with tiger elements from Burberry, Valentino, Moschino, Kenzo, Ralph Lauren, Chloé, Marc Jacobs, Hefang, Chow Tai Fook, Swarovski, and Lukfook. The promotion also features Chinese New Year limited-edition expressions from The Macallan and National Cellar 1573.

CDFG is also welcoming new stores and brands to its offline outlet, including a limited-time Givenchy duty free store, Kenzo Kids, Moschino Kids, and Chopard sunglasses.

A seasonal sale is underway in Macau and Hong Kong, where CDFG International has been hosting flash sales with 2x loyalty points, and further discounts of buy 2 get -25% off, buy 3 get -30% off on select products, and buy 3 get -15% on food.

Offers include Sekkisei Vitalizing Serum for HK$420 (US$53.80); Shiseido White Perfection Softener Enriched at HK$390.60; Fresh Floral Recovery Calming Mask (HK$435/US$55.80); Tom Ford eye shadow palette (HK$534/US$68.50); Yeng Kee Snoopy Egg Roll (HK$89/US$11.40), and Manda Beauty PLUS Jelly for HK$258 (US$33).

CDFG is offering a promotion at CDF Grand Lisboa Palace Macau both within its mini program online and physical outlet offline. Customers with any spend online can visit offline stores for free gifts, and shopping coupons of MOP1,430 (US$179) is also offered to customers shopping in the mini program e-store.

Customers shopping at the Grand Lisboa store can enjoy up to MOP1,200 (US$150) in cash coupons per MOP 9,000 (US$1,123) spend in maximum 2 receipts, and 2 extra MOP50 (US$6.25) cashback coupons for total spend (in 2 receipts) over MOP 3,000 (US$375).

The retailer is also featuring a ‘New Year Look Book’ with products from Kenzo, Valentino, Breguet, Loewe, Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Ferragamo, Chloé, and Gucci to inspire New Year fashion ideas.

Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex (HTDF)

HTDF ran five Chinese New Year promotions across various brands and categories last week. These included buy 3 get -30% off perfume and cosmetics and a -35% off flash sale on select bestsellers; -40% off or buy 1 get 1 free on Ahava, YSL, and Calvin Klein.

HTDF also offered a free gift per eligible spend on Lancôme, YSL, Estee Lauder, Decorté, and Kiehl’s; and a free body whitening spa experience per CNY5,000 (US$786) spend in 1 receipt.

Extra cashback & discounts were offered in partnership with American Express (cash coupon of CNY370/US$58.20 for spend over CNY3,000/US$470 via POS); Everbright Bank (maximum CNY300/US$47 off per CNY3,000 spend via WeChat Pay using Everbright credit card); and Bank of China (CNY109/US$17 off CNY 500/US$78.60 spend when paid with Bank of China Digital Yuan Wallet).

With the promotions offered, customers can buy La Mer moisturizing cream at CNY1502.2 (US$236); Lancôme Absolue Eye Cream duo set for CNY987.7 (US$155); Ahava 24K Gold Mineral Mud Mask at CNY178.8 (US$28.11); YSL lipstick and lip gloss for CNY147.6 (US$23.20); and Calvin Klein perfume at CNY410 (US$64.50) for two.

Seasonal gifting ideas featured included Lancôme Absolue skincare set at CNY2,023 (US$318); Estee Lauder skincare set (CNY1,207.5/US190); Clé de Peau Ultimate Daily Emulsion skincare set (CNY1389.5/US$218.40); Helena Rubenstein Powercell skincare set (CNY1,700.3/US$267.30); and La Mer moisturizing cream and concentrate serum set (CNY3,521/US$553).

Also on offer are The History of Whoo Cheongidan skincare set (CNY994/US$156.20); Kiehl’s Ultra Facial skincare set at CNY431.2 (US$67.80); Biotherm Aquapower skincare set (CNY441.7/US$69.40); and L’Oréal Revitalift skincare set at CNY255 (US$40).

In addition to the Shu Uemura pop-up store and Martell x Royal Salute Chinese New Year special gift box, HTDF also opened a duty free store for Schaffrath, the premium jewellery brand from Germany, on 22 January.

Sunrise Duty Free

Sunrise Duty Free Beijing held a livestream at 7pm on 21 January featuring promotions on skincare and makeup products including Tom Ford foundation, eyeshadow pallet and lipstick, Origins toner and serum, Clinique serum, Dr. Jart+ Toning Light moisturizer, and Darphin skincare set.

Sunrise Duty Free Shanghai also held a livestream on Estée Lauder products on 21 January and a Shiseido livestream on 22 January.

The retailer has also been running promotions on various skincare, makeup, perfume, boutique and liquor, including buy 1 get -15% off Helena Rubenstein eye cream; buy 2 get -25% off SK-II Skinpower skincare set and Jo Malone perfume; buy 2 get -30% Decorté Prime Latte essential softening milk; buy 1 get -15% Ferragamo tie; buy 1 get -30% off Samsonite spinner; and buy 1 get -10% off Johnnie Walker XR 21 whisky.

DFS

DFS has been promoting luxury jewellery and watches from Bvlgari, Chopard, Piaget, DeBeers, Jaeger-LeCoultre and fashion accessories through its virtual idols Villa and Reddi.

Villa and Reddi are considered two of the metaverse’s most exciting hyper-realistic virtual idols, Reddi and Vila. DFS said that the move marks the opening of a new digital marketing frontier for the company, timed to welcome the Year of the Tiger and to introduce DFS customers from around the world to a new era of virtual reality (look out for our detailed story on this development coming soon).

DFS also hosted a livestream on 20 January 20 at 7pm featuring Gucci perfume and makeup products, where customers could enjoy exclusive discounts and free gifts including cushion foundation at MOP551 (US$68.80), lipstick for MOP328 (US$41), and Flora perfume at MOP847 (US$106). Customers were also encouraged to interact and answer questions related to Gucci’s products during the livestream to win free gifts.

Global Duty Free (GDF) Premium Plaza

A Chinese New Year sale at GDF covers all categories at up to -60% off and 6x loyalty points. Details of the promotion include SK-II Facial Treatment Essence 230ml duo at CNY1,338 (US$210); Origins Mega-Mushroom Treatment Lotion 200ml duo at CNY176 (US$27.70); and Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land and Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur at 6x loyalty points.

A Michael Kors watch was on offer at CNY1,326 (US$208.50); an Emporio Armani watch at CNY1,960 (US$308); M.A.C blusher (CNY116/US$18.20); Estée Lauder double wear foundation (CNY216/US$34); Teeling Irish whiskey CNY150-190/US$23.60-US$30), and Dewar’s whisky at CNY105-130 (US$16.50-US$20).

GDF also held a livestream at 7:30pm on 19 January, offering promotions on Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum, Shiseido Ultimune serum, Clé de Peau Le Sérum, Elixir Lifting Moisture Emulsion and other bestsellers.

CNSC

CNSC has been running a promotion to celebrate the introduction of new brands including Dior, YSL, Armani, Chow Tai Fook, Lukfook, Dyson, Fiyta, and Pandora.

Customers can enjoy buy 1 get -15% off and buy 3 get -30% off with 5x loyalty points on YSL and Armani; and buy 1 get -5% off and buy 2 get -10% off on fixed price products from Chow Tai Fook.

They can also purchase 1 get -10% off and buy 2 get -15% off with 2x loyalty points at Lukfook; -10% off with CNY200 (US$31.40) off a CNY1,000 (US$157.20) spend at Fiyta; and buy 1 get -20% off and buy 2 get -30% off with 5x loyalty points at Pandora.

CNSC also celebrated the opening of Shiseido-owned NARS on 21 January. Other brands coming soon include Apple, Givenchy, Dunhill, Etro, Tom Ford, Valentino, LeSportsac, Gucci, Ping, and Honma.

Times DF Mission Hills

Times DF Mission Hills has been running promotions on La Prairie and Hair Rituel by Sisley, including a buy 1 get -20% off and buy 3 get -30% off on La Prairie as part of the grand opening promotion.

Customers can shop for the Platinum Rare Cellular Night Elixir at CNY6,179.6 (US$971.50); Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Elixir CNY4,989.6 (US$784); Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Cream CNY7,714.7 (US$1,212.80); Skin Caviar Liquid Lift CNY2,846.2 (US$447.50); Skin Caviar Luxe Cream at CNY4,033.4/US$634; and White Caviar Illuminating Clarifying Lotion for CNY1,060.5 (US$166.70).

A promotion on Hair Rituel by Sisley offers buy 1 get -20% off and buy 3 get -30% off. Customers can purchase Hair Rituel shampoo at CNY318.5 (US$50.70); conditioner at CNY286.3 (US$45); hair mask at CNY381.5 (US$60); hair serum at CNY766.5 (US$120.50); and volumising spray at CNY360.5 (US$56.70).

Extra discounts of CNY238 (US$37.40) off any CNY3,000 (US$471.60) spend and CNY200 (US$31.40) off CNY2,000 (US$314) spend are also offered to customers with Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China credit cards respectively.

The Shilla Duty Free

Korean travel retailer The Shilla Duty Free has been targeting its Chinese customers with a ‘What’s In My Carrier’ promotion on various travel-related products, including Fuji Instax Mini 9 camera at US$88.27; Roxy flip flops for US$21; a JJOBI Wind portable fan at US$23.75; YSL Pure Shots sunscreen (US$52.25); and Acqua Di Parma Fico di Amalfi EDT at US$71.25.

Lotte Duty Free

Korean number one (and world number two) travel retailer Lotte Duty Free promoted an array of New Year makeup products with a focus on the colour red. Offers include 3CE lipstick at US$15; Gucci lipstick atUS$38; Shu Uemura lipstick (US$37); Charlotte Tilbury K-Romance lipstick (US$37); 3CE cushion blusher (US$13); M.A.C blusher (US$31); Givenchy blusher (US$48); and CLIO blusher (US$19).
