Diptyque calls on Halong Bay inspiration with limited-edition Do Son fragrance

Line drawings of Halong Bay, the inspiration for Do Son, can be seen on the limited-edition packaging of the collection

French fragrance house Diptyque is launching a limited-edition expression of its Do Son fragrance with an animated film.

Do Son is a fragrance collection inspired by the childhood memories of Yves Coueslant, one of Diptyque’s founders.

The film launched on 5 January can be viewed here.

The evocative film brings Diptyque’s creative process to life and portrays the moment when Coueslant decided to create a modern reinterpretation of Do Son.

The film was created by Parisian studio Werlen Meyer with music by British singer/songwriter James Blake. Meyer is known for its work with filmmaker Wes Anderson and Belgian singer Stromae.

The film features evocative illustrations and line drawings that depict Halong Bay in Vietnam, which inspired the fragrance. The same illustrations can be seen on the limited-edition Do Son bottles and packaging.

The floral fragrance was created by Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin, with input from Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and Yves Coueslant. The scent is centred around a refreshing marine accord with Tuberose, Orange Blossom and Jasmine notes.

The Do Son collection comprises an eau de parfum, eau de toilette, Tuberose Candle 190g, Tuberose Candle 600g, cleansing hand and body gel and  perfumed soaps. It is now available in selected Diptyque stores in global travel retail.

Commenting on the fragrance, Pellegrin said: “It was a collaboration, with much sharing and listening between the three of us. I drew sustenance from the tales of travel and of life imparted to me during my encounters with the founders of Diptyque, and Do Son was born out of those conversations.

“The fragrance was my attempt to recreate, via the distinctive scent of tuberoses, the atmosphere and the memory of a childhood spent in Vietnam.

“Tuberose is an exceptional flower – majestic in every respect, enveloping and material. It became our point of reference. I worked on it with great care, developing its green, aquatic, floral, creamy and sunny facets. And that’s how the accord came into being.”

Last year, Diptyque collaborated with acclaimed fashion photographer Tim Walker to release a limited-edition book that features sumptuous photographs representing Walker’s own portrayals of Do Son.
