US. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority broke ground on a new US$1.2 billion passenger terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport.

Dubbed ‘Elevate BUR’, the project marks the start of what the airport authority calls the era of travel and connectivity.

BGPAA President Felicia Williams said: “From the friendly staff, to the airlines, to the convenience, Hollywood Burbank Airport is the gem of this community. We have a great team of airport commissioners with backgrounds in finance, law, construction and public service who are dedicated to moving this project forward on time and on budget.”

A modern check-in process including automated kiosks will be installed at the terminal to streamline the passenger experience

The 32,980sq m terminal will replace the existing facility to comply with Federal Aviation Administration standards and state building requirements while enhancing passenger experience.

The project will include retail and F&B offerings, modernised restrooms, a new ticketing lobby, baggage screening system, an updated TSA checkpoint and a revamped baggage claim area.

Passengers can enjoy dining and lounging with the unobstructed views of the airfield
Additional retail and F&B concessions will be located opposite the boarding gates

With a focus on passenger safety, the distance between airport runways and the terminal building will be increased. The project will also include earthquake-resistant features and will be designed following Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility guidelines.

In addition, there will be a 4,264sq m aircraft parking area for boarding and deplaning, a parking structure with EV charging and an on-airport access road.

With sustainability another fundamental element, the terminal is designed to minimise the airport’s carbon footprint and achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification. It will feature electrical vehicle charging, electric ground service equipment airside and water use reduction connections to its regional transit network.

The terminal will feature airport gate lounges designed for common use to accommodate any airline

Hollywood Burbank Airport Executive Director Frank Miller said: “We’re excited to celebrate this milestone that brings us one step closer to a more elevated travel experience for our passengers. I want to thank our Commissioners and the Burbank residents for their support, without which this project will not be possible.”

The airport authority commissioned Jacobs Project Management to provide management services and Corgan for the architectural services in association with CannonDesign. The design-build project is led by Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture.

Construction of the terminal is scheduled to begin this year and is slated for completion in 2026. ✈
