IRELAND. Duty Free Global Founder Barry Geoghegan is our winner of the second Strange Predictions* contest hosted by Strange Nature Gin of New Zealand.

We asked readers to predict the result of three intriguing English Premiership football matches played between 26 and 28 October.

Leicester City (controlled by King Power CEO Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha) vs Nottingham Forest (26 October) – Result 1-3

West Ham United vs Manchester United (27 October) – Result 2-1

Arsenal vs Liverpool (28 October) – Result 2-2

Strange Predictions asked entrants to:

  • 1. Name the winner of each match (or a draw)
  • 2. Predict the scores
  • 3. Name the New Zealand region Strange Nature Gin emanates from.

Barry came out on top courtesy of picking the exact 2-1 West Ham victory over Manchester United (what else would you expect from a lifelong Liverpool fan?), the only contestant to predict an exact score.

On countback therefore, he headed Moët Hennessy Travel Retail Asia Pacific Assistant Business Planning Manager Shen Zheng, who picked the Arsenal-Liverpool draw but not the correct 1-1.

As this week’s super-pundit, Barry wins a bottle of fabulous Strange Nature Gin.

Flashback to July 2022 in a downtown Dublin bar as Barry Geoghegan (pictured right, in green, but we think you know that already) consoles Martin Moodie (in, and feeling, black) after Ireland trounced the All Blacks 23-12 in the second test of a three-match series in New Zealand. And, yes, Ireland went on to win the series 2-1, if you really need to know. Can the Irish repeat the dose on their home turf?

Green or black?

It won’t be the only great Kiwi spirit Irishman Barry encounters this month as on Friday his national rugby team play the All Blacks from New Zealand at the Aviva Stadium.

This is a grudge match if ever there was one, the All Blacks having crushed the favoured Ireland’s Rugby World Cup hopes in the quarter finals last year by 28-24 in a desperately close affair. With home advantage, can Ireland gain revenge?

“Never a surer word was spoken,” writes Dermot Davitt

“Ireland’s chances are between slim and none,” writes Martin Moodie. “And Slim just left town.”

For our next Strange Predictions contest, we are asking readers to:

  • Pick the winning team (or draw)
  • Pick the score

Rules:

    • Entries will first be assessed on correctly answering question 1. From that cull the winner will be whoever picks the closest score differential (e.g. If  Ireland wins 23-12 and your prediction is 16-15 your differential would be 10).
    • Only entries from bona-fide members of the travel retail and aviation community will be accepted.
    • Judge’s decision is final.

Send your answers to: Martin@MoodieDavittReport.com headed ‘Strange Predictions – Green or Black’ before kick-off on 8 November.

Strange Predictions

Strange Nature, the quirky super-premium New Zealand gin, has gained impressive traction in travel retail and selected local markets since its launch in October 2021, is partnering with The Moodie Davitt Report in a pioneering readers’ competition called Strange Predictions.

The year-round programme will feature a series of predictive contests designed to test readers’ punditry skills across a myriad of events, ranging from sporting contests to political elections and other intriguing – and sometimes strange – events.

Strange Nature General Manager – Owner Rhys Julian said: “At Strange Nature we like to embrace the strange.  We consider our gin to be stranger than most, considering its grape origins, one botanical as well as sustainability and traceability credentials.

“Therefore, in fitting with the brand we thought partnering with The Moodie Davitt Report’s Strange Predictions was a perfect fit. A fun competition for everyone, slightly left of centre, is very much our vibe.”
