WHSmith names Leo Quinn as Executive Chairman to lead next phase of growth

WHSmith has today (19 January) confirmed the appointment of Leo Quinn as Executive Chairman, effective 7 April, subject to shareholder approval.

Quinn brings extensive leadership experience, having spent more than 20 years as CEO of publicly listed companies, most recently at the UK’s largest infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty.

With a proven track record of transforming businesses, he has consistently driven sustainable cashflows and strong shareholder returns, generating £5 billion in total value.

The highly regarded business leader brings over 20 years’ executive experience with global companies, including seven years in the USA.

Quinn’s appointment comes amid a leadership transition, with Annette Court leaving her role as Chair and Non-Executive Director at the company’s annual general meeting on 2 February.

Simon Emeny, who remains Senior Independent Director, will also serve as Interim Non-Executive Chairman until Quinn’s appointment.

In line with these leadership changes, the resolution to re-elect Annette Court as a director of the company will be withdrawn.

WHSmith Chair Annette Court said, “The Board strongly believes that Leo’s record of leadership and significant experience of successfully delivering transformation for large international companies make him the right candidate to deliver the group’s return to stability and long-term growth strategy.

“I wish Leo, the Board and the entire team of dedicated colleagues at WHSmith the very best for the future.”

WHSmith Senior Independent Director Simon Emeny added, “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Annette for her leadership of the company and, in particular, through the recent challenges.

“Annette has played a vital role in navigating the business through this period and ensured that the platform is in place for Leo to lead the next phase. I would also like to welcome Leo to WHSmith and I look forward to supporting him in the years to come.”

WHSmith Incoming Executive Chairman Leo Quinn commented, “WHSmith is a great business with a remarkable heritage.

“Working with the leadership team and our colleagues worldwide, I intend to ensure the company has the right foundations in place to deliver long‑term value for its investors, business partners and employees.”
