SSP brings local flavour to Belfast International Airport with Flax & Soda debut

UK. SSP Group has opened a Flax & Soda casual-dining restaurant at Belfast International Airport, marking a further step in the airport’s £100 million (US$135 million) transformation programme.

Located in the centre of the upgraded Departures Lounge, the 280-seat venue offers an all-day dining format.

The concept is rooted in a strong sense of place, with a focus on Northern Ireland produce and partnerships.

Local sourcing sits at the heart of the offer, with regional ingredients featured across the menu, spanning meats, bakery, dairy and a curated drinks selection of local beers and spirits.

SSP has also partnered with Belfast-based Knead Pizza to bring its product into the airport environment.

The sense of locality extends to the design. A central feature is a bespoke mural titled Best of Belfast by local artist Keith Drury.

SSP UK & Ireland Chief Property & Business Development Officer Stuart Buchanan said, “One of our key focus areas has been expanding our bespoke airport bar and kitchen concepts grounded in a strong sense of place.

“Flax & Soda is another example of this strategy in action, celebrating the region through a distinctly local proposition that perfectly complements our broad portfolio of F&B units at Belfast International Airport.”

The opening forms part of a wider overhaul of the airport’s food & beverage proposition. Since the start of the programme, SSP has introduced units including Soul & Grain, Starbucks and Burger King, alongside a refurbishment and capacity increase for The Lagan bar.

The company noted further development is planned, with the final phase of the F&B upgrade due later this year, including a new 300-seat premium bar and kitchen concept.

Belfast International Airport Chief Commercial Officer Kate Sherry commented, “Flax & Soda is a most welcome addition to our food & beverage landscape at Belfast International Airport and reflects our vision to transform the airport experience.

“With a focus on celebrating local flavours and ingredients, this new family-oriented restaurant is designed to offer our passengers a fresh and innovative dining experience.

“Flax and Soda is more than just a dining destination – it’s a tribute to the vibrant culture that makes Belfast and the entire region unique.” ‍
