INDIA. Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the official opening of its Terminal 2.
The airport company describes this important milestone as a “decade of exceptional service, innovation and operational excellence”.
The terminal was inaugurated on 12 February 2014, marking a new era for one of India’s busiest travel hubs.
The terminal has witnessed a growth rate of +11% in passenger traffic, with annual passenger numbers increasing from 12 million in its inaugural year, to 51.58 million in 2023. The airport also saw average daily flights rise from 410 in 2014 to 640 in 2023.
Terminal 2 features a unique design and infrastructure, an integral part of the airport’s modernisation and a symbol of Mumbai’s progress, CSMIA said.
Inspired by the graceful peacock feather, the airport’s logo represents “national pride, India’s diversity and a commitment to global standards”.
CSMIA has continued to improve the terminal’s infrastructure and technology since opening its doors. Upgrading works include improving security areas, introducing Taxiway Z to optimise airside function, installing self-service e-gates, introducing DigiYatra and implementing a parking guidance system.
CSMIA has also leveraged technologies including biometric authentication, AI and IoT-enabled systems, and customer relationship management tools.
Over the last ten years, Terminal 2 has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Level 4+ transition in the Airports Council International World Airport Customer Experience Accreditation, a first for an Indian airport. CSMIA also won the Innovation Champion award for Taxiway Zulu at the Wings India Awards 2024. ✈
