LVMH-owned fragrance and beauty house Guerlain has relaunched the L’Art et la Matières fragrance line, unveiling a new chapter in its haute parfumerie history. It is now available in selected travel retail locations worldwide and on Guerlain.com.
The revamped collection was previewed during a virtual press conference on 29 June hosted by Guerlain’s Perfume duo Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk and attended by The Moodie Davitt Report.
The L’Art & La Matière Collection, described as the crowning jewel of Guerlain’s haute parfumerie offer, was originally launched in 2005. The revamped range takes inspiration from the art world and features 17 eaux de parfums that use only the finest ingredients in the world of fragrance.
The collection combines 11 of the L’Art & La Matière line’s original scents with the addition of four renamed fragrances. These are Frenchy Lavande, Herbes Troublantes, Œillet Pourpre and Épices Volées (formerly Le Frenchy, Un Dimanche à la Campagne, Lui and Arsène Lupin Voyou, respectively) as well as two new scents: Rose Chérie and Santal Pao Rosa.
The other fragrances in the collection are Rose Barbare, Joyeuse Tubéreuse, Cruel Gardénia. Embruns D’Ylang, Néroli Outrenoir, Bois D’Arménie, Iris Torréfié, Cuir Béluga, Angélique Noire, Spiriteuse Double Vanille, Tonka Impériale.

The two new fragrances pay tribute to the rose, one of Guerlain’s most important floral fragrance ingredients. Rose Chérie combines Damascena rose, Bulgarian Rose water and Turkish Rose Absolute with powdery almond, pink raspberry white heliotrope and violet notes. It pays homage to the rose garden previously located on rue Guerlain in Paris near the Passy factory, where Guerlain’s manufacturing facility is located.
Santal Pao Rosa is a powerful woody floral scent that blends rose with sandalwood, myrrh and agarwood, underpinned with fig and hazelnut notes. It was inspired by the Pao Rosa, a scent created by Aimé Guerlain in 1877.
Guerlain has also released the L’Art & Matière Discovery set which features eight assorted 10ml bottles. The set includes Rose Chérie and Santal Pao Rosa, Angélique Noire, Cruel Gardénia, Cuir Béluga, Néroli Outrenoir, Rose Barbare and Spiritueuse Double Vanille.
The unisex L’Art & La Matière flacons, available in 100ml and 200 ml formats, were conceived as ‘objets d’art’. It pays homage to Guerlain’s heritage square bottle, originally introduced in 1870. Like the original square bottle, the new fragrance bottles were produced by French glassmakers Pochet du Courval, Guerlain’s long-standing glass partners since 1853.

The bottle features the Guerlain Paris logo in gold lettering, while the back is engraved with the signature Guerlain bee. The bee represents Guerlain’s commitment to sustainability, underpinned by its numerous bee conservation and protection initiatives including the Women for Bees project.
Each bottle can be personalised. Customers can choose from 12 different bottle stopper plates, including three limite- edition plates, designed by renowned names in the world of fashion and jewellery. These include a straw marquetry plate by Lison de Caunes, a bee-embroidered plate by Atelier Bizet and a jewellery plate by Atelier Trusceli. Customers can also different coloured threads for the tassel and engrave the bottles with their initials.

The L’Art & La Matière range comes in customisable and refillable bottles line with the house’s sustainable commitments. The flaçons were made using 10% recycled glass and packaged in cardboard sourced from sustainably-managed forests. The packaging also reflects a -62% decrease in size for the 100ml format and a -45% reduction in size for the 200ml formats.
In addition to the L’Art & La Matière collection, Guerlain has revealed L’Art de Vivre, a new range of candles and diffusers that celebrates the art of Parisian living and Les Matières Confidentielles, a collection of refined fragrance sprays and mists.
L’Art de Vivre comprises six different scents which are available as candles, including three fragrances available as scented diffusers.

These are the Figue Azur, Encens D’Hiver, Ylang D’Outremer’ Bois des Indes, Muguet de Printemps and Épices Sous Les Étoiles, with the first three also available as diffusers. The line is available in a 220g refillable candle format with a guaranteed diffusion time of 55 hours. The wax refills are protected with 100% recycled casing that allows for simple removal.
The Les Matières Confidentielles is a vibrant collection of eaux de toilettes that can be used as body sprays or mists. The collection mimics the sensorial feeling of fabrics on the skin. It comprises the Eau de Cashmere, Eau Secretè, Eau de Lit and Eau de Lingerie fragrances.
The line is packaged in a similar refillable square-shaped bottle to the L’Art & Le Matière range.
