FRANCE. Retail space at Paris Orly Airport is set to double once a major expansion and modernisation programme is completed in July, Aéroports de Paris said today. A new commercial zone will measure 2,200sq m, with nine shops and a new food & beverage concept.
“We are doubling the retail area in Terminal South at Paris Orly Airport. We will hence be able to offer passengers a more spacious retail area with, for example, a giant shop of 600sq m dedicated to gastronomy, spirits and tobacco,” said ADP Marketing, Retail and Communications Director Pascal Bourgue. The shop is operated in partnership with Aelia through the Société Aeroportuaire de Distribution (SDA) joint venture.
The SDA joint venture opened a 600sq m store in February dedicated to wines, spirits, tobacco, gastronomy and confectionery. The shop houses a cigar cellar of 70sq m which guarantees optimum storage conditions. A team of professionals advises clients on about thirty brands of cigars and more than 200 references.
ADP Retail Director Florence Lenne said: “Among our clients, particularly to North Africa, cigar lovers are more and more numerous. Tobacco and gastronomy products occupy an important place in their purchases, particularly chocolate bars which are easy to eat on the plane.”

The multi-brand store also has a tasting corner, available for passengers to discover the selection of wines and spirits. More than 100 wine references are available. Aelia Category Manager Pascal Merle said: “Our shop today offers a very large choice of wines. Our clients look for original or grand cru wines they can buy as a gift or souvenir from France. We spend time advising them and aim to develop their knowledge of wine.”
In January 2008 Aéroports de Paris opened a 100sq m watch and jewellery shop in the new retail area. It offers a range of jewellery and watches linking emblematic Parisian luxury and new custom jewellery. A 340sq m Printemps boutique offers a selection of around 20 clothing brands, leathergoods, sunglasses and jewellery with prices ranging from €15 to €700.

Retailer HFP-Phénix General Manager Richard Geneste said: “70% of our clients come to the shop to buy presents. Passengers to Morocco and Algeria purchase mainly upscale fashion items; regarding flights to the West Indies, many clients buy their beachwear at the airport, particularly their swimsuits.”
To complete the expansion, there will follow a Virgin outlet plus a Relay-Kaboom shop from Lagardère Services: this new concept offers a selection of toys and children clothes combined with a press offer. A Swatch boutique, a Solaris sales point and a Beauty Unlimited area of 550sq m will complete the retail offer by July.
Food & beverage options
The new retail area at Orly South Terminal is organised around a Bert’s bar & restaurant. This 370sq m area offers 180 seats and three settings responding to passengers needs: leather sofas and armchairs for a cosy atmosphere, restaurant tables to gather around a meal, bar stools for snacking. Bert’s, established for the first time at an airport, offers varied and health food based on menus elaborated by the nutritionist Jean-Paul Blanc.
“This concept is a first at an airport. It responds to two strong expectations of our clients at Orly South: quality light food at downtown prices,” explained Florence Lenne.
Aéroports de Paris said its surveys revealed that 73% of travellers from Paris Orly South travel for leisure. More than half of the passengers are seasonal travellers. The majority are French (70%) followed by Spanish and German passengers (4%). The key destinations are North Africa (24% of flights) and the West Indies (15%).
Paris Orly Managing Director Patrice Hardel said: “Aéroports de Paris invested €25 million to develop the international circuit of Paris-Orly South, from June 2006 to summer 2008. This project has allowed the creation of a single central security check area, the development of a 7,000sq m boarding area – the largest at Paris-Orly, the opening of Icare lounge dedicated to business passengers and finally the construction of a 5,600sq m baggage delivery area dedicated to jumbo aircraft.”
