PERU. Alpaca 111, the luxury alpaca wool scarf brand, has reported continued progress in the South American travel retail market and a recently secured listing with Harding Bros onboard three luxury P&O cruiseships.

Worldwide Duty Free Manager Francisco Siles said the company had been granted additional space at Santiago de Chile Airport’s duty free shop. “We used to have a 1sq m booth in Santiago de Chile’s Duty Free; now we are working on our new 12sq m booth, which will be opening in October 2005,” Siles told The Moodie Report.

“Alpaca 111 will be located in the exclusive boutiques area together with many famous brands such as Burberry, Hermès, Longchamp, Cartier and Montblanc. We are estimating that this growth in space will increase our sales by about +400%.”

In Uruguay, Siles reported a sales record with the Buquebus cruiseship operator. “Our sales onboard the cruiseline Buquebus in Uruguay and Argentina have increased by about +200% during the first half of 2005 versus the same period of 2004.”

The luxury brand has continued to arouse the interest of more duty free operators, according to Siles. “Our participation at the IAADFS Show of the Americas in Fort Lauderdale, TFWA Asia Pacific in Singapore and Asutil in Buenos Aires has let us stay in touch with duty free retailers,” he said. “We are delighted to announce the start of an operation from November with P&O Harding Brothers to supply the Queen Mary 2, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony cruise liners, and also with London Supply at Iguazu Fall and Port Ushuaia.”

At the brand’s home airport at Lima in Peru, the brand has achieved “very good” sales, reported Siles. Alpaca 111 has four stores: two owned stores, one in the duty free zone and one in the duty paid area, and two corners with Aldeasa. Last August Alpaca 111 celebrated its first year selling inflight on LAN Airlines. “We hope to add more colours and other accessories in the near future,” said Siles. Alpaca 111 offers special packaging for airlines (also pictured).

Next year the brand will begin trading at Madrid and Barcelona Airports in Spain with Aldeasa.
