US. Travel restaurateur and retailer Areas has been awarded a 15-year contract to operate five new restaurants at San Diego International Airport. Its estimated value over the term is US$550 million.
As reported, Areas is among the final group of concession partners just announced by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board for the new Terminal 1.
The Areas concepts for T1 include Novecientos Grado, a partnership between skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and award-winning chef Claudette Zepeda; Mediterranean restaurant Luna Grill, which offers a strong focus on healthy eating options; beer and wine-tasting establishment SIP Wine & Beer; Carnitas’ Snack Shack, which is inspired by a well-know meat restaurant in San Diego city centre; and pizzeria Mr. Moto’s Pizza.
The company will invest US$18 million into the development of the concepts, which are scheduled to open from 2025.
With this contract, Areas now manages 140 points of sale in 11 airports and 13 travel plazas across the US.

Areas noted it has been awarded seven major contracts within the last six months with a total value exceeding €2,500 million (US$2,142 million) including three others in the US. Those include managing three travel plazas on the West Virginia highway, and F&B contracts at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and Mexico’s Guadalajara Airport.
Areas CEO Oscar Vela said: “This contract awarded in San Diego airport proves the success of our commitment to international business, which already represents 80% of our revenues, and reaffirms the expansive cycle that Areas is experiencing thanks to the diversification strategy that we have carried out in recent years.”
He added: “The United States is the key market for the company‘s growth in the coming years and the fact that four of the last seven big contracts have been awarded in this country proves it.”
