Areas the big winner as Aena awards Barcelona Airport food & beverage contracts

SPAIN. Airports group Aena today named nine food & beverage partners that have won contracts at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, following a major tender released last September.

Barcelona-based Areas is the big winner with 22 outlets out of 48 in total, followed by Pansfood (12), SSP (five), Avolta (three) and Eurest (two). Lagardère Travel Retail, Enrique Tomás, Five Guys and Good News won one unit each. The contracts cover new and upgraded spaces across 20,500sq m in terminals 1 and 2.

The process attracted strong interest, said Aena, with 16 local, national and international players between them submitting 84 bids for the 48 contracts. The opportunity was first flagged at the Airport Food & Beverage + Hospitality Conference (organised by The Moodie Davitt Report) in Barcelona last June.

The contract term is eight years in most cases, with some extending to ten and 12 years, “ensuring stability and a long-term culinary vision”, according to Aena.

The refreshed F&B programme will add 15 new brands and three operators making their Barcelona Airport debut: Eurest, Five Guys and Good News. The space available was around +30% more than under the previous comparable bid for F&B space at the airport.

The sum of the Minimum Annual Guaranteed income from these tender awards represents a sharp uplift of as much as +32% in some cases compared to current contracts, said Aena.

Aena General Director for Commercial and Real Estate María José Cuenda said, “The response of local, national and international brands to the project, which we named Muerde Barcelona (‘Barcelona Bites’), has been excellent, both in terms of the quality of the technical bids and the increase in income.

“This catering renovation is one of the cornerstones of Aena’s commercial strategy in Barcelona and reinforces the airport’s positioning as a hub, with a diverse and innovative culinary proposal in line with the standards of the main European airports.”

A diverse and contemporary culinary offer

The  new restaurants will offer a wide variety of concepts from international brands to innovative local proposals.

In quick service and informal catering, categories such as burgers and international cuisine have been reinforced with the inclusion of Five Guys, which opens for the first time in an Aena airport, together with established brands such as Burger King and McDonald’s.

The offer is supplemented with brands such as KFC, Taco Bell, Subway, Popeyes, Pret A Manger, La Place and La Donatella, as well as emerging and specialist names such as Motta, Lady Babka, Wetherspoon, Sana Locura (gluten-free) and speciality coffee brand Good News.

Local flavours are promoted through Barcelona brands such as Boldú, Morro Fi, Bar Bocata, Chalito and Demasié, which bring well-regarded city-based gastronomy names to the airport.

The airport will continue to maintain a premium offer led by the Torres Brothers at restaurant Alas, operated by SSP, while Catalan chefs will feature at Terra, a healthy restaurant that will help the airport’s culinary propositions stand out, said Aena. ‍
