‘Celebrating 30 years of scientific collaboration’: Shiseido Group extends ties with US research partner

JAPAN/US. Shiseido Group has extended its research alliance with the Cutaneous Biology Research Center (CBRC), in celebration of the laboratory’s 30th anniversary. The new agreement will be effective from July 2021 to June 2027.

The CBRC was co-founded by Harvard Medical School Dermatology Research Labs and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1989.

In the last 30 years, Shiseido Company has been collaborating with the CBRC and with national and international external organisations to conduct cutting-edge research in skincare and beauty.

Shiseido Group President and CEO Masahiko Uotani said the alliance with CBRC is integral to ensuring the company’s legacy.

“In our quest to remain vital for the next 100 years and beyond, this year, we at Shiseido created a new corporate mission to create ‘Beauty innovations for a better world.’ Ongoing efforts to foster innovation is our responsibility and mission to make this world better through the power of beauty.”

“The CBRC is an indispensable and important partner for Shiseido to create unprecedented, first-of-its-kind value and change the lives of people around the world. Let us cling together for the future and challenge for the innovation that surpasses society’s expectations,” he added.

The sentiment was echoed by Shiseido Group Executive Vice President Yoichi Shimitani who said: “It has been 30 years since we began our partnership with the CBRC. We have delivered many outstanding research achievements, more than we had initially imagined, realising ideal collaboration between laboratories in academia and a company. We will continue to create innovation with the CBRC, a state-of-the-art laboratory that symbolises our open innovation activities.”

He added: “We are proud to celebrate 30 years of important discoveries by our scientists working together, and look forward to continued progress in optimising all aspects of skin health and wellbeing.”

The partnership goes hand-in-hand with Shiseido’s “Beauty innovations for a better world” philosophy, and helped establish Shiseido as “a pioneer of open innovation.” The extension will allow Shiseido and CBRC to continue in its joint pursuit of developing leading-edge skincare and cosmetics through dermatological science.

The research projects include studies on ultraviolet rays and aging, and the development of new cosmetics. The laboratory will also aid in providing necessary consumer information to help maintain healthy skin through various seminars and symposiums. This includes information regarding UV rays and photo-aging.
