CHINA. Intensive end-year promotional efforts saw China Duty Free Group’s (CDFG) six locations on Hainan Island generate sales of CNY1.4 billion US$191.2 million across the five-day period from 27 to 31 December.

The retailer’s efforts started as early as 21 November with the launch of the ‘China Duty Free Annual Shopping Gala’. From then until year-end sales had grown over the same period in 2023, CDFG said.

During the ‘BIG DAY’ event from 27 to 31 December, the CNY1.4 billion in sales came from more than 80,000 transactions, resulting in a near +15% increase year-on-year, the company said.

CDFG said it had made great efforts to attract customers and increase revenue through an array of promotions, price offers, enhanced service quality, and an enriched shopping experience.

While adopting the related concepts of ‘tourism + performing arts’, ‘tourism + sports’, and ‘duty-free + cultural tourism’, CDFG brought what it called a ‘combination punch’ of year-end benefits to consumers. These included additional membership points, shopping coupons, -10% price-offs and more.

The retailer collaborated with more than 1,000 brands in publicising the Annual Shopping Gala BIG DAY on mainstream and social media platforms.

New Year’s Eve activities included a ‘Ten Gifts’ event, offering accessibly priced products and the 2025 Star Wish Night, which saw downtown stores remaining open until 2am.

Attractive price offers have been a key component of the year-end campaigns

A live New Year’s Eve performance; a CNY49,999 (US$6,829) super lottery; cash-filled red envelopes; and other multiple gifts and exciting activities helped create what CDFG called an “unforgettable” New Year’s Eve for consumers and fans.

CDF Hainan International Duty Free Shopping Complex’s New Year’s Eve event was featured on CCTV’s News Network.

Elsewhere in Haikou, the CDF Haikou Sun Moon Plaza Duty Free Store held a Star Wish Party featuring a range of consumer attractions and incentives.

Summing up its approach, CDG said in recent years Hainan has adhered to the principle of “shaping tourism with culture and promoting culture with tourism”, focusing heavily on youth-driven and fashion trends.

The retailer pledged to continue its ambitious promotional activities in the run-up to this month’s Spring Festival holiday, striving for a good start to the first quarter of 2025. 🏝️
