VIÑA 27: Raimat Chardonnay 2007

SPAIN. Codorníu has redesigned its flagship Raimat wine brand with new labels to highlight the selective harvesting of the grape varietals.

The elegant labels now display the numbers of the most important vinestocks of the Spanish winery, which give their name to the Raimat grape varietals: vineyard zone VIÑA 19 represents Merlot, VIÑA 27 signifies Chardonnay, VIÑA 32 is Cabernet Sauvignon, VIÑA 43 is Tempranillo and VIÑA 54 is Syrah.

These five vineyards are the final outcome of a viticulture project that Raimat has undertaken following a detailed study to identify the zones that yield the best vinestocks for each varietal.

The introduction of precision viticulture has meant “a big breakthrough”, Codorníu said, enabling Raimat to find out which zones yield the best vinestocks for each varietal.

Raimat classified its 2,245 hectares of vineyards to identify more precisely the quality potential of each zone and plot on the estate.

Based on the findings of the study, the vineyards on the estate were divided into 70 sub-zones differentiated according to qualities, varietals and the characteristics of the wines elaborated on each of them.

As a result, the viticulture team introduced different ways of cultivating the vineyards with regard to watering systems, management and pruning, with the aim of optimising grape quality.

At the end of the survey, the wines were tasted and the results studied. The winemaking team then chose a combination of variables which yielded excellent quality and varietal expression.
