DENMARK. In June a total of 1,913,263 passengers passed through Copenhagen Airport, an -8.7% year-on-year fall. But the drop is lower than that experienced in the first five months of 2009, with figures stabilising due to summer holiday demand, said Copenhagen Airports.
Total international passenger figures slipped by -9.4% to 1.73 million, with domestic traffic easing -2.1%.
Scheduled international traffic slumped by -9.1% to 1.57 million during the month, with charter traffic declining by -12.6% to 151,747.
Of the airport’s departing passengers, 241,153 were transfer/transit, a decrease of -16.4% against June last year. Local passenger numbers fell by -5.4% to 752,295.
There were 21,304 take-offs and landings at the airport in June, a fall of -11.4% on last year’s figures. Of these, 18,056 (-12.6%) were international and 3,248 (-4.2%) were domestic.
“The current economic situation hasn’t caused as many Danes to deselect air travel this summer as we might have feared. The national programme to make available Special Pension (SP) funds is probably also contributing to people’s increased urge to travel,” said Copenhagen Airport Director of Aviation Carsten Nørland.
According to Nørland there is some uncertainty about how passenger numbers will develop in the months ahead.
“Given the economic situation it will be interesting to see what we will be facing when the summer holidays are over. If business travellers adopt a different travel pattern than previously, this will continue to have a negative impact on passenger numbers,” he concluded.
