INDIA. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has revealed plans to renovate Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 2.
The project is scheduled to start in the 2025-26 financial year, with completion targeted for the second quarter to address increasing passenger traffic.

Built by the Airports Authority of India 40 years ago, the terminal will undergo extensive modernisation to meet current passenger needs and support future growth.
The renovation work forms part of DIAL’s strategy to transform Indira Gandhi International Airport into a premier travel hub for India and Southeast Asia.
Since its opening, the terminal has been integral in handling the surge in air traffic. With domestic passenger numbers forecast to reach their peak by FY 2025-26, the planned refurbishment is vital for expanding capacity, optimising operational workflows and enhancing the passenger journey.
Comprehensive upgrades across key areas
Key highlights of the modernisation programme include six advanced Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) to be imported from South Korea, featuring autonomous docking, which is described as an industry first in India.
These new PBBs will also feature elevated ramps for wheelchair accessibility, redesigned cabins for an improved boarding experience and enhanced safety features such as side-covering cushions and swing doors.
The terminal will receive an overhaul of its mechanical and electrical systems, including upgraded HVAC units to ensure optimal air quality and comfort. In addition, modern fire safety systems will be installed to strengthen security across the terminal.
Civil and infrastructure enhancements will also be a key part of the refurbishment project. These will feature modernised ceilings, smart washrooms and advanced flooring. Road access will be improved, and forecourt canopies will be added to provide weather protection, especially during the monsoon season.
New high-resolution flight information systems and signage will be introduced to provide more accurate real-time flight updates, with a focus on accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.
The airside and apron areas will undergo significant refurbishments to accommodate growing traffic and ensure seamless ground operations.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said: “The refurbishment of the four-decade-old Terminal 2 is the need of the hour. We are committed to enhancing the overall passenger experience by upgrading key infrastructure, improving operational efficiency and elevating passenger comfort.
“With the terminal’s projected passenger capacity expected to reach its peak by FY 2025-26, these enhancements will be crucial in supporting the growing demand for air travel, particularly for domestic passengers. This initiative is a key part of DIAL’s long-term strategy to establish Delhi Airport as a leading hub for both domestic and international travellers.”
During the renovation period, T2 will be temporarily closed for a period of four to six months. The newly revamped T1 will take on the increased passenger traffic, ensuring operational continuity and minimising disruption to travellers. ✈
