Welcome to Duty Calls. This regular feature aims to shine a light on some of the most laudable examples of altruism and sustainability within the travel retail industry by companies that go beyond the call of duty.
USA. HMSHost Foundation has raised US$270,000 for charity at its second annual Chef’s Table event.
Nearly 20 celebrity chefs from across North America gathered in Washington, D.C. for the occasion, and prepared multi-course gourmet meals tableside for guests to enjoy.
Illusionist and puzzle maker David Kwong, whose show The Enigmatist has been playing to sellout audiences in New York, made a special appearance. Law firm Baker Hostetler was presenting sponsor of this year’s event.
“It is amazing to host Chef’s Table for the second time to raise money and awareness for HMSHost Foundation’s fight against poverty,” said HMSHost Foundation President Paul Mamalian. “We are grateful to our sponsors and chefs for lending their resources and talents to us for this important cause.
“The message we want Chef’s Table to deliver is that HMSHost Foundation is serious about taking action in the fight against poverty.”
Since HMSHost Foundation’s inception, it has donated more than US$1 million to 64 organisations in the USA and Canada.
“HMSHost Foundation is making great progress and we look forward to continuing to exponentially grow the impact across North America,” said HMSHost President & CEO Steve Johnson.
“With over 40 million people living in poverty, we know there is considerable work to do still but we are persistent in this fight and that is why tonight is so important.”
Chef Lorena Garcia (pictured below) said it was an honour to be a partner with HMSHost and to participate in Chef’s Table. “This event brings together a wonderful group of chefs, raising so much awareness around poverty and the work being done to combat it, something we as chefs are very connected to through working with food in our communities,” she said.
