Gérard Bertrand to focus on exclusives and estate wines for Cannes

Gérard Bertrand will showcase its range of super-premium wines from the South of France at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes next month (stand number: Red Village K11).

The French winemaker said it offers a diverse range of high quality wines – from sparkling, reds, whites and rosés to varietals and appellations – suitable for all sectors of the travel retail business.

Highlights from its portfolio include Gris Blanc, a pale and crystalline rosé that has become “the benchmark rosé” in fine establishments both in France and export markets, according to the winemarker. It has a pale and crystalline colour and pairs well with seafood and Asian food.

Code Rouge was created as a tribute to the world’s first sparkling wines, made by the monks of Saint Hilaire Abbey, near Limoux. This cuvée bears the traditional features of Gérard Bertrand’s wines such as the winemaker’s emblematic red colour bottle.

Gérard Bertrand has also released the Collection Legend Vintage, an exclusive range of vintages (from 1875 to 1974) which has already carved a presence in travel retail with Aelia, Le Clos at Dubai International Airport, Oceania Cruises and The Nuance Group at Toulouse Airport.

“Our strategy is to grow the knowledge and uptake of super-premium South of France wines into the duty free sector,” the company stated. “The key business objective is to focus on our estate wines, which are recognised as benchmark estates in each of their own terroir.”

Gérard Bertrand wines hail from several estates, each representing one of the company’s values: Domaine de Villemajou, Domaine de Cigalus, Domaine de l’Aigle, Château Laville Bertrou, Château Aigues Vives, Château l’Hospitalet, Château La Sauvageonne, and Château de la Soujeole.

Domaine de Villemajou, situated in the inland region of the terroir of Boutenac in Corbières, is the family home and estate of Gérard Bertrand and thus reflects the family’s traditional values.

Domaine de Cigalus, cultivated with biodynamic agriculture, represents innovation and a shift in the winegrower’s vision. This biodynamic conversion underlines a commitment to using natural agriculture methods – an approach that is also being adopted at Château La Sauvageonne. The latter is located on what is described as an exceptional terroir of the Terrasses du Larzac – at an altitude of 300m, the landscape is heavily influenced by the region’s volcanic past.

Château l’Hospitalet, which is currently being converted to biodynamic farming, is said to be a famous wine tourism destination and the flagship of the La Clape appellation. It was the only red wine poured at the banquet of the 2013 Nobel Prize Ceremony.

The Domaine de l’Aigle Chardonnay has been selected as the exclusive and official white wine at this year’s TFWA inauguration dinner. Domaine de l’Aigle is one of the highest vineyards in the Haute Vallée de l’Aude and in all of Languedoc, at an altitude of about 500m. The estate is said to produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir characterised by the freshness and minerality of the Languedoc-Roussillon.

“The Terroir and Grand Terroir ranges bear also the expertise and the values of Gérard Bertrand, following the same dynamic of our estate wines, to highlight the best that the Languedoc-Roussillon has to offer through its diversity of terroirs,” the winemaker said.
