Passenger volumes hit a new high in September, with healthy growth from key emerging markets such as China and Mexico

UK. London Heathrow Airport handled 6.77 million passengers in September, up by +2.9% year-on-year, making it the busiest September ever for the UK hub.

Within emerging markets, passenger volumes were particularly strong to Mexico (+16.5%), China (+11.9%) and to the Middle East (+7.2%) as carriers benefited from the introduction of new A380s.

In the year to date, passenger traffic climbed by +2.3% to 56.9 million.

As government considers a decision on whether to allow a new runway to procced at either Heathrow or Gatwick, Heathrow claimed it would assist the development of the northern UK economy by creating more export links to fast-growing markets.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “With Heathrow expansion, we have a once in a generation opportunity to create 180,000 jobs and provide future generations with the sustainable infrastructure they’ll need to keep Britain at the heart of the global economy. The Chancellor called for Britain to build the new roads, railways and runways it needs to prosper. Heathrow is ready to build – let’s make it happen.”
