Images of the Day: Galloping into the Year of the Horse at Hong Kong Airport

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

HONG KONG, CHINA. Today’s images come from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and show how the airport and its retailer and brand partners are already galloping towards Chinese New Year (CNY) 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, writes Martin Moodie.

None of those parties is galloping more friskily into CNY than Duty Zero by cdf, whose parent company China Tourism Group Duty Free would, a few hours after I took these shots on Monday 19 January, announce that it is acquiring DFS’s travel retail businesses in Hong Kong and Macau and intangible assets in Greater China.

Duty Zero by cdf is a class act – in my view one of the world’s best airport liquor & tobacco stores – as the photos below confirm, with a fantastic mix of Chinese and international spirits and tobacco, a top-class wine and Champage offer, and plenty of newness.

Expect the action to really heat up over the next month in keeping with the particular nature of the Horse.

Chinese New Year falls on 17 February and for China Tourism Group Duty Free it promises to be a particularly celebratory occasion.

Seconds after clearing security and then immigration, every traveller is reminded of the impending Year of the Horse and of how Lancôme is celebrating the occasion. The limited-edition version of Lancôme’s Génifique Ultimate Serum, beautifully showcased via this JCDecaux installation, features packaging inspired by artist Xu Beihong’s acclaimed ‘Run Off the Ground’ galloping horse painting.

And some of the many CNY limited-edition bottlings will no doubt be poured by none other than Duty Zero by cdf’s ZERObot, an AI-driven, dual-arm robotic bartender. ZERObot won the ‘Most Innovative Use of Technology’ accolade at the 2024 Moodies Awards.
