Images of the Day: Lisbon Duty Free serves up a deliciously evocative taste and sense of place

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

PORTUGAL. Today’s images come from Lisbon Duty Free – part of the Portugal Duty Free joint venture between Aer Rianta International (ARI) and VINCI Airports-owned Aeroportos de Portugal – at Humberto Delgado Airport, writes Martin Moodie.

I snapped the photos below on my iPhone during two visits to the airport in December.

As I wrote in my Chairman’s column in our year-end eZine, it is rare for any anchor duty-free shop’s destination merchandise range and environment to match the host airport’s specialist offering.

But despite Lisbon Airport offering several outstanding standalone boutiques packed with quality local products (including the simply wondrous, riotously hued Mundo Fantástico da Sardinha Portuguesa, my choice as Airport Specialist Store of the Year), Lisbon Duty Free takes full advantage of gaining first access to the passenger (thanks to the walkthrough formula).

Lisbon Duty Free not only offers a diverse medley of regional delights, ranging from Portuguese wines (table and fortified), spirits and liqueurs to chocolate and fine foods but complements them with an enticingly colourful, vibrant store ambience.

It is an authentically top-class line-up and environment, beautifully presented. A duty-free store that surprises and delights.

Is there a better demonstration of both sense and taste of place in any anchor duty-free store worldwide?

Judge for yourself. Here are some of my favourite shots.
