Images of the Day: Star guest photographer captures Alicante Duty Free allure

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

SPAIN. Today’s photos are the fine work of travel retail veteran Peter Sant, long-time Rémy Cointreau Global Travel Retail Director and now Director of UK consultancy MPC Global.

Peter was travelling back to the UK from Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport earlier this month, snapping the images while enjoying the diversity of the Avolta-run Alicante Duty Free departures store.

Peter’s adept work came at the request of The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie after they caught up landside at Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. Click on the image to read about the encounter on The Moodie Blog. Peter used his iPhone 14 to capture his store images.

The liquor zone offers plenty of vibrant promotional activity, much of it targeted at (now non-EU) British passengers. Here, Peter captures a high-profile promotion for Sovereign Brands-owned Bumbu rum.
Liquid to lips as the drinks industry adage has it, is a mantra keenly adopted by Alicante Duty Free. Read here how specialist integrated marketing and design agency WePurple believes a focused and creative approach to wine and spirits sampling could unlock US$180 million in incremental annual sales for the travel retail spirits category.

Licor 43 is a liqueur emblematic of Spain and in particular Cartagena, 90 minutes by road to the south of Alicante in Murcia province. Ever wondered how the brand got its name? Simple, it is made from a secret recipe of 43 natural ingredients, including Mediterranean citrus fruits and select botanicals.
Now there’s a tempting invitation as a quality quartet of liqueurs and wines are showcased in style

The spirits zone places a strong emphasis on Spanish products, alongside a wide range of international favourites
For once in airport retail, the tobacco category (both traditional and reduced-risk products) enjoys open store visibility rather than being hidden away in the manner of a Prohibition-era Speakasy. Note the focus on UK-bound travellers.
Philip Morris International’s reduced-risk brands, e-cigarette Veev and heat-not-burn IQOS, enjoy due prominence in the store
The wider beauty category provides plenty of choice with The Estée Lauder Companies portfolio notably well represented
Including, of course, the house’s eponymous flagship brand

Canadian brand Nudestix – founded in 2014 by sisters Ally and Taylor Frankel and acquired this September by an unnamed US-based private investor – places cruelty-free, vegan makeup centre stage
Since its launch on 30 September 2024 at TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes, Club Avolta has gained extraordinary global visibility across the travel retailer’s vast geographic footprint
The Avolta-run (albeit with a nod to the former Dufry branding) Alicante Duty Free satellite store presents a secondary shopping opportunity
Whopper of a queue: Spain may boast some of the world’s most tantalising cuisine but global fast food favourite Burger King was by far the airport’s busiest outlet when Peter visited late on a Sunday afternoon
