Industry first: Tidal Rum to distill product at sea with P&O Cruises

Jersey-based rum brand The Tidal Rum has partnered with P&O Cruises to create the first rum to be made and distilled at sea. The product, to be launched on new ship Arvia, will eventually be available on all P&O ships.

The Tidal Rum said it has a shared passion with P&O “for the sea environment and commitment to sustainability”.

The Tidal Rum is infused with lightly oak smoked Pepper Dulse, foraged from Jersey’s shores, which gives it a salted caramel flavour

Since its launch in the summer of 2019 by Shorts Boy Distillery founders Ben Clyde-Smith and Harry Coulthard, The Tidal Rum has crafted a distinctive taste which comes from coastal botanicals found at full lunar tides.

The Tidal Rum told the Moodie Davitt Report that distillation will commence in the ship’s Anderson’s Bar as soon as Arvia begins sailing in December. The company said it will recreate the recipe and bottle onshore, ready to share and serve to guests across the P&O Cruises fleet.

The brand said that its rum’s rich golden smoothness comes from a blend of Caribbean cask-aged rums from Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and Dominican Republic. The Tidal Rum added that it takes pride in sustainably using botanicals that thrive on the tidal coastline of Jersey.

Coulthard said: “With our new rum, we wanted to bring together the finest rums of the Caribbean with the fresh notes of coastal botanicals from the shores of Britain’s islands. Whether you’re taking your first sip while enjoying a stunning island horizon or a beautifully crafted cocktail in Anderson’s Bar, our rum has all the ingredients of an unforgettable P&O Cruises holiday.”

Note: The Moodie Davitt Report recently launched a new column, The Rum Diaries. The series is designed to champion arguably the world’s most underrated spirits category. The first edition highlights a remarkable rum that bears the name of writer, entrepreneur, abolitionist and one-time slave Olaudah Equiano. Read it here.
