AUSTRALIA. JR/Duty Free has opened its newly redeveloped departures store as part of a terminal expansion project at Darwin International Airport.
With a new footprint that is more than double the size of the old store, the “brighter, more contemporary” space is said to offer passengers a larger range across all product categories.
NT Airports CEO Ian Kew said the new JR/Duty Free stores will provide the diverse offering expected by top end travellers. “Our expanding terminal has a clear goal, and that’s improving the travel experience for passengers,” he said. “Internationally, there’s a strong leisure market travelling in and out of Darwin – people who fly regularly and demand choice, interest and convenience when they shop. The completion of the arrivals and departures stores will provide a great atmosphere for shoppers and a positive impression for visitors to the region.
“The new stores will also give customers the chance to pick up department store offerings that are harder to come by elsewhere in Darwin.
“Darwin was the site of JR/Duty Free’s re-entry to the Australian market in 2007, and a strong partnership has developed since then. Its commitment to this extensive redevelopment displays confidence in Darwin’s potential and the market’s future.”

JR/Duty Free CEO Milton Lasnitzki said: “It’s been exciting to be involved in Darwin Airport’s terminal redevelopment and we’re looking forward to growing our NT business. We know travellers will be delighted with the redesigned outlets and the greater choice of product that they will be able to purchase, either on departure from, or arrival into Darwin.
“The liquor offering will see new names such as Kraken rum, Nikka whiskey and Crystal Head vodka. There will also be a greater range of premium Australian wines and new champagnes available such Bollinger, Louis Roederer and Armand De Brignac. The beauty offer includes new brands such as Shiseido and Philosophy and a much deeper range of products in the existing brands.
“In addition passengers travelling through Darwin International Airport will now have the choice to shop online ahead of time. They can use their PC, tablet or mobile to purchase duty free and tax free products and their order will be waiting for them at the collection counter upon departure or arrival.”
The expansion of Darwin’s terminal is said to be the largest project undertaken by Darwin International Airport since the building was opened in 1991, and has provided 11,000sq m of extra space for security screening, departure lounges, and check-in and baggage facilities. Still due to open in July in the international area are an upgraded News Travels outlet and a new bar and café called Two Brews.
