US. The Clark County Department of Aviation has issued a Request for Proposals for a liquor retail outlet in the baggage claim area of Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. As reported, the move was flagged by the airport in February. The Arrivals unit would represent a first for US travel retail, according to the airport (and will, we understand, be duty paid, not duty free).
Director of Aviation Randy Walker said the store could generate between US$400,000 and US$600,000 in annual revenues, which he said would help offset airline landing charges.
In February he told the Clark County Board of Commissioners: “What we want to do is go out with an RFP to see if there are interested parties who would provide a type of store that would be appropriate for the airport. It would need to be a first class operation. If we don’t like [the responses] we don’t have to do anything. But my challenge, as well as cutting costs, is to find new revenue sources to manage the airport as best we can.”
