ISRAEL. Layam-Sakal Company has retained its long-time concession to operate the duty free shop at Ovda International Airport.

The company won a new five-year contract, starting on 1 January, after an open tender contested by Sakal’s major rival James Richardson.

Sakal has been operating the Ovda concession for 15 years. The 350sq m store sells to a diverse customer mix including passengers from France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Russia and Japan.

The company said: “There has been a tremendous increase in the number of passengers and this will increase even more in the coming years due to the fact that the Israeli Ministry of Tourism has started a campaign to encourage tourism to Eilat.

“This will undoubtedly have a great impact on the number of tourists coming there and consequently the number of duty free buyers will grow.”

The store carries a wide assortment of categories, including spirits, cigarettes, cigars and tobacco, fragrances and cosmetics, electronics, optical devices, cameras and photo equipment, sports-related items, fashionwear, bags and luggage, toys and gift items, writing instruments, watches and confectionery.

Fragrances is a core category for the Ovda store
