There, the airport company is pledging flexibility and creativity in its concession planning, as well as a stunning retail and food & beverage environment. In short, it says, it is “tearing up the rule book”.

We talk to other companies that are trying to be daring and different in this issue. Among them is Schiphol Airport Retail, which is attempting to engage and divert travellers’ attention in some surprising ways at the new-look Lounge 1 at Schiphol.

We also talk to one of the industry’s major players, Gebr Heinemann, about how it is combining its proud traditions with a relentless focus on expansion and growth in the modern era. The family-owned company opens up about how it aims to become a truly global powerhouse, and build on its €3.2 billion in 2013 revenues (retail plus wholesale) in the years ahead.
