Lotte Duty Free taps into growing Taiwanese market with LINE Pay Taiwan launch

SOUTH KOREA. Lotte Duty Free has today (1 July) introduced LINE Pay Taiwan across all of its domestic stores starting this month, enhancing payment convenience for Taiwanese travellers.

The initiative reflects growing visitor numbers from Taiwan in Q1 2024, now the third-largest source market for South Korea, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.

The collaboration between Lotte Duty Free and LINE Pay Taiwan enhances the experience for a growing wave of Taiwanese tourists

Leisure, entertainment and relaxation accounted for nearly 90% of visits by Taiwanese tourists, underscoring a strong preference for travel-driven experiences in South Korea.

The surge in visitor numbers made it a key sales driver for Lotte Duty Free, with Taiwanese shoppers ranking fourth in sales after China, Korea and Japan, supported by a sharp +30% year-on-year increase.

Used by more than half of the island’s population, LINE Pay Taiwan is a leading payment platform that enables seamless transactions and provides access to merchant information and financial content.

To celebrate their partnership, Lotte Duty Free has rolled out a special promotion for LINE Pay Taiwan users until 30 September.

Shoppers at any of the retailer’s downtown locations are eligible to receive up to KRW350,000 (US$258) in LDF PAY rewards, based on the total value of their purchase.

In addition, Lotte Duty Free will be promoted within LINE Pay Taiwan’s platform, featuring seasonal events, popular products and store information to attract more Taiwanese tourists.

The retailer noted its plans to continue expanding payment options and partnerships to enhance shopping convenience and deliver greater benefits to customers.

In May, Lotte Duty Free teamed up with Daiso and WeChat Pay to offer exclusive promotions for Chinese customers, which received a favourable response.

Lotte Duty Free Team Leader of FIT Marketing Choi Mi-hwa said, “With the steady rise in Taiwanese visitors to Korea, we expect the introduction of this new payment method to significantly improve customer convenience.

“We will continue upgrading our infrastructure and services to provide the most satisfying shopping environment possible.”
