UK. BAA today announced two senior appointments within the UK Retail team.
Mark Riches, currently Managing Director of World Duty Free, extends his remit to become Managing Director of Global Airport Retail, reporting directly to Group Retail Director Brian Collie.
In addition to his current role, Riches will assume responsibility for the retail businesses outside the UK, which includes operations at airports in America, Australia, Oman and Italy. He will also join the International Board.
Paul Weber continues with his role as International Retail Director, and his successful global teams will now report through Mark Riches.
Colin Hargrave has been appointed to Managing Director, UK Airport Retail, reporting to Brian Collie. In addition to his current role, which now expands to include Commercial Telecoms and E-Commerce, he will assume functional responsibility for T5 Retail. Nick Ziebland, T5 Retail Director and his team will functionally report through Colin Hargrave.
Mike Clasper, CEO, BAA commented: “Both Mark and Colin have provided an outstanding contribution to the business over the years. The skills and experience they bring to their newly-expanded roles will enable them to drive the business forward and help to ensure a seamless transition as we integrate a successor to Brian Collie.”

COMMENT: This announcement is not only appropriate recognition of two individuals who have played critical roles in World Duty Free’s and BAA’s recent success story but also a shrewd move by BAA.
It consolidates both individuals’ positions in the run-up to what seems certain to be an external appointment to replace Collie. The new BAA Group Retail Director will not necessarily come from a retail background. Mike Clasper is an ex-P&G man and is almost certainly looking for a marketing-savvy heavyweight business person with an understanding of and affinity for the city. It is crucial that that individual be surrounded by the best retail talent and BAA has just taken an important step in ensuring that is the case.
