Middle East and East European routes drive passenger growth for Vienna Airport in 2007 – 17/01/08

AUSTRIA. Vienna Airport passenger traffic recorded growth of +11.3% in 2007, compared to the previous year, with strong contributions from routes to the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

The airport handled 18.8 million passengers in the year, 1.9 million more than in 2006.

Traffic on routes to the Near and Middle East grew by +18.5% in the year, while East European traffic rose by +24.8%. Low-cost carrier traffic increased by +57.2% in the 12 months.

The leading routes in the year were Frankfurt, London and Paris, while Moscow, Bucharest and Sofia were the most popular destinations in Eastern Europe. Among long-haul routes, the top destinations were Bangkok, Washington and Tokyo.

Vienna Airport forecast an +8% rise in passenger traffic in 2008, when the airport is expected to handle 20 million passengers.
