Rémy Martin presents Louis XIII Black Pearl, ‘a rare and exclusive treasure’ – 28/02/07

Just 175 of the carafes are allocated to carefully selected travel retail and duty free outlets

FRANCE. Louis XIII Black Pearl Cognac, described as “a rare and exclusive treasure”, is an exclusive series of 786 carafes numbered from 001 to 786, which reinvent the original Louis XIII carafe.

This was a metal flask found in 1850 on the site of the French Battle of Jarnac – which in 1569 pitted the Catholics, under the Duke of Anjou, against the Protestants of the Prince of Condé – and then acquired by the Rémy Martin family.

First launched in Asia travel retail in January, followed by the US and now Europe, Louis XIII Black Pearl is presented in a luxurious coffret. Retailing at around €6,000 (US$7,925), just 175 of the carafes are allocated to carefully selected travel retail and duty free outlets around the world, including France, Germany, Guam, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and the US.

Rémy Cointreau Global Duty Free Director Peter Sant said: “Louis XIII de Rémy Martin had already established a niche in duty free sales, where it benefited from the unique exposure to a premium market. The Global Travel Retail team feels honoured to be entrusted with the sale of nearly a quarter of the total number of carafes in the world of this extraordinary cognac.”

The Louis XIII Black Pearl carafe is crafted in the finest Baccarat crystal in the colour of anthracite, which is designed to play with the light to create flashes of silver, black, chrome, blue and mahogany.

The 786 numbered carafes come from a single century-old tierçon barrel used in the final ageing, which had until now been hidden in the personal reserve of the Hériard Dubreuil family.

The barrel has aged and nourished the Cognac, blended from around 1,200 eaux-de-vie originating from the slopes of the Grande Champagne region, some of which are over a hundred years old.
