Retailer delight as offshore duty free stores reopen in Haikou

China Duty Free Group’s store at Mova Mall, Haikou is open again for business as is its near neighbour GDF Plaza and Times DF (Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS Group) in Mission Hills
GDF Plaza announces the good news on WeChat

CHINA. In welcome news for Hainan’s all-important offshore duty free sector, stores in Haikou reopened today after their latest closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak on the island.

China Duty Free Group and GDF Plaza, both located in Mova Mall, Haikou confirmed the reopenings to The Moodie Davitt Report this morning as did Times DF (Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS Group) in Mission Hills.

While local authorities reported another 482 new locally transmitted cases on 18 August (compared with 496 and 482 on the two previous days) out of 559 across the whole of Mainland China (excluding symptomatic cases), the flare-up remains centered in Sanya to the south.

As a result, the offline stores in Sanya run by China Duty Free Group (Haitang Bay), CNSC and HTDF remain shut. The CNSC and HTDF stores closed on 4 August and the vast China Duty Free Group complex a day later.  They have remained shuttered since though online business continues.

As reported, the Haikou offline stores closed on 17 August just a day after reopening. This continued a stop-start pattern that had seen retailers forced to first shut their offline operations on 8 August before being allowed to reopen the next day but then close again on 10 August.
