AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport passenger traffic hit a new monthly high in August. Passenger numbers climbed by +5.7% to 3.09 million, with international traffic outstripping this rate of increase to grow by +7% year-on-year. Domestic traffic grew by +4.9%.
For international traffic, the major nationality markets that grew included Australia (+4%), Singapore (+96%), Malaysia (+92%), Indonesia (+68%), China (+17%), India (+10%), Germany (+8%), New Zealand (+5%), Japan (+4%) and the USA (+4%). The UK (-7%), France (-5%) and Korea (-2%) were the major nationality markets that declined.
CEO Kerrie Mather said: “International traffic was driven by double-digit growth in Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian nationals arriving in Sydney. In addition, Australian outbound grew +4.4% driven by increased travel to destinations such as the USA, Middle East and South-East Asia.
“Capacity is a key driver of passenger growth, and it is pleasing that Aerolineas Argentinas, China Eastern and Air Canada will add more seats to Australia’s premier gateway from December.
“The airport continued to benefit from the recovery in the domestic market with traffic growing by +4.9%. Pleasingly, this is the third consecutive month of growth in the domestic market. The four major airlines all grew seat capacity, however competition in the low cost segment has been the catalyst for passenger growth with Tiger and Jetstar providing the strongest contributions.
