AUSTRALIA. Sydney Airport has submitted a revised retail development proposal to the Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Services for his consideration.
The proposed retail development, which is planned to be located adjacent to Foreshore Road at the southeast precinct of the airport, is a revised version of one of the proposals that Sydney Airport released for public comment in November 2005.
Sydney Airport has withdrawn its plans for the larger Aviation and Retail Precinct (including cinemas) and instead submitted a significantly reduced version of the Aviation and Retail Business Park (including offices).
The revised proposal will now comprise a retail development of 48,400sq m Gross Lettable Floor Area (GLFA) and 2000sq m GLFA of mezzanine offices. The proposal will encompass an outlet centre (24,000sq m), homemaker centre (10,000sq m), food courts (1,900sq m) and independent discount store (12,500sq m) and will also include 2,412 car spaces, retention of coach parking and provision for public transport.
Sydney Airport Corporation Limited CEO Russell Balding said: “The public comment process, undertaken in accordance with the relevant legislation, has resulted in substantial changes to Sydney Airport’s proposal.
“Concern was also expressed about the overall size of the development and the extent of new traffic generation. We have reduced the size of the development by 17,000sq m or -26% and reduced car parking capacity by some 400 spaces or -14% from what was initially proposed under the smaller option.”
The development of the retail centre will provide new jobs for the area with an estimated 1,180 direct and a further 1,890 indirect jobs during the construction phase, and 760 on-site retail jobs once the centre is operational.
“In accordance with legislation we are now proceeding to the next phase by submitting the proposal to the Federal Minister for his consideration,” Balding said.
