MACEDONIA. TAV Airports Holding has completed a major renovation project at Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport in Macedonia, as part of a big investment in the country’s two key airports. The group, which gained operational control of both Ohrid and Skopje airports in March 2010, recently completed the one-year renovation programme designed to provide faster, higher quality services to passengers and airlines.
The company added a VIP building, an aircraft hangar and a parking lot of 6,000sq m to Ohrid Airport, located in Macedonia’s leading tourism centre and a UNESCO World Heritage List site. The terminal building and the existing parking lot, administrative building and cargo hangar were renovated.
TAV Airports has also begun modernisation work at Skopje, where it will increase annual passenger capacity to 3 million with a new terminal building, as well as expand the apron and runway, and increase cargo and parking capacity. It is expected that the work at Skopje will be completed within the last quarter of 2011.
Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who participated in the opening ceremony at the newly renovated Ohrid Airport, said: “St Paul the Apostle Airport – operated by TAV Macedonia in Ohrid, the Macedonian region with the highest tourism potential – will make great contributions to Macedonia’s tourism with its new facelift.”
TAV Airports Holding CEO Sani Şener added: “We believe in the future of Macedonia. Ohrid, which used to be one of the most important tourism centres in the Balkans, will regain the position it deserves with its renovated airport.”
“We are very glad to be in Macedonia with Skopje Alexander the Great and Ohrid’s St Paul the Apostle airports. We fully believe in the future of the country and of the sector. We are combining the global experience we transfer to the country with local values and aim to provide the best service.”
