Lagardère Travel Retail and partner Bevco capture Dar es Salaam T3 duty free contract

TANZANIA. Lagardère Travel Retail and local partner Bevco Limited have captured an exclusive concession for two duty free stores in the new Terminal 3 at Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International Airport. The contract was awarded by the Tanzanian Airports Authority (TAA). The new terminal is already operational, with the stores to be completed by the end of June.

The move will mark the entry to a new African market for Lagardère Travel Retail, which said it aims to “further capitalise on the region’s resilient attractiveness and air traffic”. The Paris-based company noted that its joint venture with Tanzanian spirits distributor Bevco would enable “strong flexibility and proximity in the management of local operations”.

Lagardère Travel Retail says it aims to support the airport company in setting new standards for retail at Dar es Salaam Airport

The stores, covering 206sq m and 160sq m respectively, will feature all core duty free categories, travel accessories, souvenirs and snacking, under the Aelia Duty Free brand. Lagardère Travel Retail said it would promote and leverage local expertise and deliver Sense of Place in the stores through Tanzanian culture, architecture and cuisine.

Sense of Place will be a key principle in the design and offer at the new terminal, while international brands will also have space to shine, says the retailer

Lagardère Travel Retail COO EMEA Frédéric Chevalier said: “We’re delighted to have won this exclusive concession at Dar es Salaam Airport alongside our very strong local partner. We look forward to developing our innovative concept which brings together powerful, international brands and the unique, vibrant culture of Tanzania. By working closely together with Bevco Limited we want to support TAA in raising its standards of excellence and appeal to international travellers. We have significant growth ambitions for our operations on the African continent and hope our experience in Tanzania will continue to consolidate our position as a leading international travel retailer in the region.”

Béatrice and Régis Voegel, owners of Incodeal AG, parent company of Bevco Limited, said: “For 20 years we have been committed to distribute and promote international wine and spirit brands all over Africa. Tanzania as a place to invest and work, and moreover as a country, is very near and dear to our hearts. We do believe that Tanzania, through its great people and thanks to its significant structural and economic reforms, is a huge influencer and a serious growth driver for the region.

“We are therefore thrilled to extend our domestic market activities into travel retail in joint venture with a worldwide recognised specialist, Lagardère Travel Retail, and in close collaboration with TAA and all local partners.”
