Scent of Africa spotlights Ghanaian heritage with Akua’ba collection

Luxury Ghanaian fragrance house Scent of Africa is launching the Akua’ba fragrance collection, a six-piece range which takes inspiration from African ingredients and symbolism.

Akua’ba strengthens the brand’s focus on bringing African stories, materials and cultural perspectives to contemporary fine fragrance.

“We want to reinforce Scent of Africa’s position as a unique African voice within contemporary fine fragrance” – Scent of Africa Founder Tanal Ghandour

The line’s sculptural flacon is inspired by the Akua’ba, the fertility figure of Ghana’s Akan culture associated with fertility, hope and beauty.

The collection pays homage to Thiouraye, the West African tradition of warming fragrant woods, resins and spices to perfume the body, clothing and home. Scent of Africa reinterprets this ritual through fine fragrance, linking the transformation of aromatic materials with different stages of love.

Scent of Africa will reveal full details of the collection at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes (H36, Green Village), ahead of its official launch later this year.

At the Cannes show, the brand will also unveil Anancy and Assaye, two additions to its Eternal Legends Collection. The fragrances were launched earlier this year and are inspired by Akan mythology (the spiritual framework of the Akan people in Ghana and the Ivory Coast).

Scent of Africa Founder Tanal Ghandour said, “Our objectives in Cannes are to unveil our new collection Akua’ba to international travel retail partners and media, strengthen existing relationships, and develop new retail and distribution opportunities.

“Above all, we want to reinforce Scent of Africa’s position as a unique African voice within contemporary fine fragrance.”

Scent of Africa has earmarked Europe, the UK and USA as key markets for its next phase of growth, supported by the forthcoming launch of its ecommerce platform.
