Images of the Day: Why Extime is always Paris Time at Charles de Gaulle Airport

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

FRANCE. I snapped our latest images while flying out of Paris Charles de Gaulle to Hong Kong last month and was immediately drawn to – and impressed by – the high-profile emphasis devoted to French products by joint venture retailer Extime Duty Free (ADP and Lagardère Travel Retail), writes Martin Moodie.

You might ask what is so noteworthy about that? But how often, I would respond, do you see derisory so-called ‘destination merchandise’ selections tucked away in a remote corner of a store, even in countries famous for their national produce?

Too often, is the answer in my experience, though thankfully – driven largely by evolving consumer behaviour underpinned by a desire for provenance, sense & taste of place and authenticity – that has changed markedly in recent years.

France, of course, is spoiled for choice in terms of a great food, fragrance, wines and spirits heritage and all are brought to life with panache and diversity here. And so, at Extime Duty Free Terminal 2A, is the travelling consumer equally spoiled.

Extime is indeed Paris Time at Charles de Gaulle, gateway to the City of Love & Light. ✈

The wide entrance offers an alluring preview of the delights to come
The sign says it all, passengers have just entered Paris Time, Extime-style
French whisky is steadily earning a well-deserved recognition outside France and is nicely represented here

French President Emmanuel Macron might be facing serious challenges right now but French Macarons will surely never lose their popularity
Despite the sign, Cognac rather than whisky is on display here, bolstered by a wider selection on the back walls (below)

Veuve Clicquot, to my mind the best travel retail-tailored brand across all product sectors, brings French flair and fizz in equal measure
Wine, the product most synonymous perhaps with France, is showcased in all its regional and varietal glory

France is home to some outstanding luxury chocolate maisons, including La Maison du Chocolat, led by Master Chocolatier Nicolas Cloiseau, holder of the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France accolade
No self-respecting French duty-free shop would fail to promote the nation’s outstanding fragrance industry and Extime does it very well. Blockbuster names Chanel and Dior are primely positioned as travellers enter the store.

From Foie Gras, integral to the protected cultural and gastronomical heritage of France, to fromage, the food offer delivers a taste-bud tempting assortment of culinary delights
