Air4casts warns of slowing pax growth in Europe – 13/06/07

INTERNATIONAL. Europe takes centre stage in Air4casts’ latest look at global passenger traffic.

The results for the 200 or so European airports which have declared their passenger numbers since April show a year-on-year upswing of just over +4%, where an expected trend value for all European airports might have been closer to +7%, says the aviation and airport industry analyst.

The May results for airlines in Europe are still too patchy to permit any analysis, said the firm. But the newly emerging trends are reflected in the latest forecasts, with passenger growth for the region now projected at only +3.9% for the third quarter.

The July outlook is a little healthier – international passenger numbers are expected to be up by +4.4%, and domestic totals by +4.3%. The July forecast for French airports is +3%, and +2.3% for Q3, but with better prospects for international passengers.

Latest forecasts for global international passengers show a predicted +5% rise in July and an increase of +4.5% over the third quarter.

In the Middle East, international passengers will be ahead of 2006 figures by +8.5% in July, with a Q3 forecast of +6.4% (slightly down on last month’s prediction of +6.8%).

The Asia Pacific region powers on with +7.4% growth projected in total passengers for next month. An increase of +7.2% is looking highly probable for the next quarter.

Japanese international passenger growth in the third quarter will sparkle with a +9% uplift on last year.

The dominant element of domestic travel demand in the US skews the picture for the region in any year. Demand in Q3 will be ‘ahead’ by +3%, and by +2.2% in July.
