Airport lounges a key focus as Oman’s Transom makes pioneering entrance into Tanzanian aviation services market

TANZANIA. Omani company Transom has launched operations in the United Republic of Tanzania, marking a key step in its global expansion strategy and introducing a fully integrated aviation services model spanning air cargo, ground handling and premium passenger lounges.

The market debut at Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport – officially launched today (13 April) – positions the company in one of East Africa’s most promising aviation markets.

The move is underpinned by a strategy that combines operational scale in cargo and ground handling services with a growing emphasis on passenger-facing hospitality, notably airport lounges.

Air cargo and ground handling form the backbone of the Julius Nyerere Airport operation, with Transom targeting development at the prominent logistics hub to strengthen regional trade flows.

Transom Cargo – a joint venture between Transom and Singapore company SATS – has built its strong reputation as the cargo terminal operator at Oman’s Muscat International Airport, where it provides cargo services to more than 30 major airlines.

Transom Chief Executive Officer Nasser Al Shurji said: “The launch of Transom’s operations in Tanzania marks a strategic milestone in our global journey. We are not only connecting people but also enabling the seamless movement of cargo by air, reinforcing vital trade corridors.

“Through this expansion, we aim to establish a dynamic logistics hub that supports import and export activities, contributing to economic growth and regional connectivity.”

Entering Tanzania’s airport lounge market

Transom told The Moodie Davitt Report it will be placing emphasis on its premium lounge proposition as a differentiating factor in a competitive and evolving aviation services market.

While lounge operations in Tanzania are still in development, the company revealed it is positioning the segment as a central component of its long-term value proposition.

Integral to the lounge strategy will be the international roll-out of Transom’s Majan Lounge brand, which the company noted draws on Omani hospitality principles.

The concept, the company said, will blend cultural identity with premium service delivery and is intended to offer a distinctive alternative within the market, while the company remains open to partnerships that enhance the hospitality proposition.

Transom confirmed to us that it is in active discussions with airlines and other stakeholders to establish lounge access frameworks that cater to both airline passengers and independent travellers, supporting a commercially balanced model and revenue diversification.

Initial development is focused on key gateways, with Dar es Salaam identified as the primary entry point given its status as a major African aviation hub.

Further roll-outs across other Tanzanian airports are expected as part of a phased expansion programme, with the first lounge openings anticipated during this year.

“While ground handling and cargo remain core revenue drivers, premium lounge services represent a strategic growth segment,” Transom noted.
