Alpha opens Sri Lanka’s first British pub – 18/10/04

Alpha Orient Lanka (AOL), in association with Ceylon Breweries, the leading beer manufacturer in Sri Lanka, has expanded its horizons with the opening of the first authentic British pub in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The pub is named “˜The Inn on the Green’, inspired by the neighbouring Galle Face Green.

The pub aims to attract an exclusive clientele, including the 30,000-strong expatriate community of Sri Lanka and holiday-makers and business people in the nearby seven key city hotels.

Much attention to detail has been given in order to create a traditional British pub setting. The Inn is furnished with traditional wooden tables and barrels, which are polished to a dark sheen. Music is played at a moderate volume and in order to preserve the typical pub atmosphere, no live bands will perform nor loud music be played.

“˜The Inn on the Green’ offers a wide range of beers, including lagers, stouts and ales, many of them new to Sri Lanka. A host of world famous names such as Tetley’s Draught, Newcastle Brown Ale, John Smith’s Bitter, Beamish Stout, Caffreys Irish Ale and Strongbow for the first time.

Paul Topping, Managing Director of Alpha Orient Lanka, commented: “Thus far, response to the pub has far exceeded expectations. We hope to continue spurring the influx of customers by conducting games nights, competitions and innovative promotions designed to make the Inn on the Green the number one choice for Colombo residents’ nights out.”
