Alpha Retail secures Birmingham CTN contract – 21/10/04

UK. Alpha Retail’s World News business has secured the CTN contract for Birmingham International Airport Terminal One.

The contract, which has been operated by WHSmith for over 20 years, is made up of four shops. These are located within the check-in area, arrivals area, the main shopping concourse prior to security and within the departures lounge.

The turnover for the new T1 contract is expected to be in excess of £60 million (US$110 million) over the seven-year term.The initial three shops will be handed over from WHSmith in January 2005, with the remaining shop within the departures lounge being transferred in December 2006.

Steve Buckley, Managing Director for World News said, “This is an exciting opportunity for World News. We have a long trading history with the airport and we are looking forward to introducing our successful World News operation into Birmingham’s Terminal One.”

Alpha Retail said it was pleased to be expanding its specialist operations at Birmingham, which currently include World News in T2, plus Bookbound in T1 and T2.

In addition to the CTN & bookshop retail contracts, Alpha Retail also currently operates Alpha Airport Shopping (Duty & Tax Free), Perfume & Cosmetics, Zinq (watches, sunglasses & jewellery) at Birmingham. Alpha Airport Catering runs two catering concessions there, Bar 08 & Deli Sandwich Bar.

World News, which offers the latest book releases, newspapers & magazines, drinks, confectionery and snacks and many other travel essentials, currently operates 31 stores in 14 UK airports – which include Heathrow (T3), London-Luton, Edinburgh & Belfast International.
