The Amarula-filled chocolate bar will be available in duty paid and duty free markets |
South African cream liqueur brand Amarula, made with fruit from the marula tree, has teamed up with Swiss chocolatier Goldkenn to launch Amarula-filled chocolate bars to raise funds for the Amarula Trust.
The chocolate bars will be distributed worldwide in duty free markets as well as in selected duty paid locations, with all proceeds going to the non-profit Amarula Trust. The trust, which focuses on sustaining rural communities through job creation programmes, also funds research into elephant behaviour as the forerunner to conservation programmes.
Thanks to the Amarula Trust and the money paid for the harvests, the women who collect the ripe marula fruits in Phalaborwa and Limpopo are able to feed their families.
The Amarula Elephant Research Programme, run by researcher Prof Rob Slotow of KwaZulu-Natal University, has been responsible for critical studies that have influenced how elephant populations are managed in many major southern African public and private game parks.
Distell Head of Travel Retail Marius Fouché said: “We are very proud to be aligned with a chocolatier of Goldkenn’s stature. The connoisseur liquid-filled 100g bars that retail for around €7 each will provide income to expand the scope of the trust’s critically important work. They will also help to raise brand visibility and create an appealing way of introducing Amarula in those markets where product tastings are not permitted.”
The chocolates are UTZ-certified for using sustainably-farmed cocoa. “This is completely in line with how Amarula is made. We use fruit grown in the wild, from trees that are protected according to South African environmental legislation and thus may not be cut down,” said Fouché.
Amarula previously worked with South African chocolatier Kees Beyers to create Amarula cream-infused chocolate and fudge for the local market. All royalties also go to the Amarula Trust.
