SPAIN. Areas has reacted to the news it has secured a new contract for 22 new food & beverage outlets at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
It follows the conclusion of Aena’s landmark tender to renew the airport’s commercial dining offer.
The tender, the largest food & beverage process ever conducted at Barcelona-El Prat, covers 48 outlets across the airport.

Areas’ new concessions span more than 8,400sq m across both terminals, which, according to the global travel restaurateur, are expected to generate €1.5 billion (US$1.77 billion) in revenues over an estimated concession period of 8-12 years.
The win significantly strengthens Areas’ position at Spain’s second-busiest airport, increasing its share of the airport’s food & beverage space from 33% to 45%.

The award comes three years after Areas secured 35 F&B establishments at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, underlining the group’s continued success in major Iberian airport tenders.
Areas said it will introduce a broad mix of proprietary, local, national and international brands.
Proprietary concepts include Deli&Cia (artist’s impression below), positioned as a healthy grab-and-go offer for modern travellers, and StrEAT, a street food-inspired gastro experience.

The offer will be anchored by well-known Barcelona brands to reinforce a strong local identity, including Boldú, Chalito, Morro Fi, Bar Bocata and Demasié.
Spanish brands such as Santagloria and Barra Lateral will also feature, complemented by an international line-up that will include Burger King, Paul, Popeyes, Subway, La Place, Lavazza and Budweiser.
Areas CEO Óscar Vela said, “With this award we’re strengthening our position as an industry-leading operator in travel food & beverage and our ability to win strategic tenders, securing our position in the countries where we have a footprint.
“We are especially proud of consolidating our presence and leadership in Barcelona, a city that has had a close relationship to the company from its early days and where we currently have our world HQ, as well as in the Barcelona-El Prat Airport, one of Europe’s major airport hubs.”
Areas Iberia CEO Sergio Rodríguez commented, “This result highlights our commitment to continue enhancing the traveller experience through offerings that combine quality, innovation and a perfectly balanced mix of concepts tailored to travellers’ needs, as well as our willingness to help turn the airports where we operate into a showcase for the very best of the local gastronomy.”
The roll-out of the food & beverage programme will be phased, beginning in May and concluding by mid-2027.
Renovation works and temporary closures will be staggered to minimise disruption to passenger service.
Areas noted it will also continue to operate its proprietary Sibarium delicatessen concept in Barcelona-El Prat Airport T1.
