MEXICO. Airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) announced yesterday that passenger traffic for October rose +20.1% year-on-year.
ASUR operates nine airports in southern Mexico. It said passenger traffic through the resort of Cancun rose +24.7% over last October while fellow resort area Cozumel jumped +45.2%.
Strong traffic growth has continued throughout the year. For the first nine months of the year, Asur recorded a +14.6% passenger traffic rise. It had initially projected a +5% increase in 2004 but business has been driven by more US tourists coming to Mexico following the March bombings in Madrid and security fears in Europe.
A weak dollar against the Euro and other European currencies has also driven growth this year as US travelers switch to non-European destinations.
