Atlanta retains “world’s busiest airport” mantle

US. Atlanta Hartsfield International airport announced last week that it handled 76.8 million passengers in 2002, a rise of +1.3%. The result positions Atlanta to maintain its place as the “world’s busiest” airport for the fourth consecutive year over Chicago O’Hare.

“This demonstrates Atlanta’s strength in the marketplace and is a direct result of hard work and commitment from our hub carriers Delta Air Lines and AirTran Airways,” said aviation general manager Ben DeCosta. In December Atlanta handled over 6.7 million passengers, a record month in the airport’s history and more than in either of the two months during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
