Bahrain Duty Free Shops reports surge in half-year results amid store development and rising passenger numbers – 18/08/08

BAHRAIN. Bahrain Duty Free Shops BSC has announced consolidated half-year sales results (January to June) of BD18 million (US$48 million), a surge of +19% compared to the same period in 2007. Consolidated gross Profits saw a +25% increase while operating profit before royalties increased by +38%.

Passenger numbers at Bahrain International Airport increased by +28% in the half compared to H1 2007. Within this, 60% of the increase came from Gulf Air transfer passengers and a significant share from the new Bahrain-based carrier Bahrain Air.

Bahrain Duty Free General Manager Steve O’Connor said: “This has been an exceptional six-month period with all elements of our business – airport duty free shops, sea ports and inflight duty free – performing exceptionally well. All KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) have surpassed 2007 numbers and the ongoing Departures shop development has added real value to the business.” The company has been renovating and remodelling key sections of its main Departures store in recent months.

O’Connor said: “Our clear focus on ensuring we continue to put the customer first – through improved customer service combined with offering exceptional and exciting products in a superb shopping environment – is clearly paying dividends.”
